Slide release is hard to release with an empty mag for a reason. Once you insert a loaded mag, it will release just fine. I was taught to pull back on the slide and release it after loading a new mag, but since I no longer have use of my left arm/hand I use the slide release.

Went and broke my new Hellcat Pro out of gunstore jail today. Next step will be figuring out what red dot (leaning toward Shield) to mount on it. Looking forward to shooting it & breaking it in.
