The Armory Life Interviews: Capt. Dale Dye, U.S.M.C. (Ret.)

Great interview. His comment on liking the movie Patton for George C. Scott's performance but not for getting the details wrong rings true. The movie was supposedly based on two primary sources, A Soldiers Story" by Gen. Bradley, and "Patton: Ordeal and Triumph" by Ladislas Farago. As it...

Forgotten Armored Assault During the Invasion of Grenada

And yet that's exactly what happened in Panama; at the last minute no less. The XVIII Abn Corps was given the task to plan and execute, then all the other services wanted a slice of the pie.

    America’s WWII Battle Against Winter

Yes, we called them Graf Jackets. I never did do it but should have. The trick was to find the softer rain top and have the wool blanket fitted and sewn into it. But I did luck out and was issued a Korean War style winter cap instead of the standard pile cap. Loved that thing.

    America’s WWII Battle Against Winter

The sad thing is it took until the 80s until any serious work was done on cold weather gear. I will say though, I found the wool shirt and the field trousers with long johns and sweaters work very well in Northern Bavaria in the winter. Hands and feet were a different issue and the wool socks...

Blue Origin launches an all-female celebrity crew with Katy Perry, Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez

Speaking of real astronauts vs. Bezos tourists, I thought the G-forces on take-off and re-entry were pretty stout. Does Blue Origin have a super secret G force reducer?

    Trump hires ATF Director

Too much detail to go into here, but the short version is NO. He was railroaded for sure. But, if he didn't know the town well enough as a three-star to have a lawyer present and then plead guilty to the trumped up charges, then he has no place in the admin. Then he picked Sydney Powell as...

    Trump hires ATF Director

Agree, plus it's an odd combination even if he is "acting." One position is law enforcement, the other is to provide forces to kill the enemy and break his stuff. Unless, and this is pure speculation, Trump wants to scale back the agency significantly so a series of acting directors would be...

The Noble (but Doomed) M551 Sheridan in Vietnam

I I don't disagree with your assessment. I loved the thing automotively, and as you said, we went places where the tank company either bogged down or would avoid entirely. We were the first squadron to get the laser rangefinder and it was damn reliable. The electrical system depended on the...

Forgotten Armored Assault During the Invasion of Grenada

It's refreshing to hear someone articulate the importance of the island to shipping lanes especially oil tanker routes. The runway expansion was not only a threat, but it was determined emplacements for Chinese made Styx anti-ship cruise missiles were being constructed. The 14.5 mm heavy...

    Independence-Class Littoral Combat Ship

And just as senseless were the pseudo-requirements generated by the magical word "GWOT." We couldn't just fight a war with what we had but taking a knee to GWOT meant money and fun gadgets and oddball concepts. The LCS just happens to be one of the most obvious and disastrous results of this...

Operation Ivory Coast: The Daring U.S. Raid on Son Tay

I had two Green Berets as instructors eons ago. Both were in the movie the Green Berets. One had three tours in VN and maintained the absence of POWs was due to a reporter who managed to view the detailed mock camp and published a picture of it in a Florida newspaper thereby alerting NVA...

Tank-Busting Stuka: The Ju 87G "Kanonenvogel"

The P47 and the P38 Lightning were not designed from the ground up so to speak as ground attack aircraft. though they were modified to perform that role and did very well. As far as I know, there were only two aircraft which were designed and developed as ground attack aircraft and that was...

U.S. destroyers to aid in drug war!

If you are referring to the Sgt. York, then yes I remember DIVADs. There was a time when fond of copying Soviet designs in this case the ZSU-23-4. So they decided to try and put a big turret on an M-48A5 chassis, try and integrate radar fire control with an F-16 radar and Bofors 40mm guns (I...
