10-7 for the last time, I am retired

Sld1959

Ronin
Today was the last day of school and barring some unforseen situation, I am retiring for the second and last time.

Retired the first time 12 years go from IT. Then got talked into taking a special needs bus driving job for a season, which turned into 11. Since my wife asked me to retire a month ago this is it. Time for a life of leisure, ya right I have seen the to-do list.

I will admit it's a rather odd feeling after 49 years, started working part time at 14. I do not think it will really hit me until Labor Day when everyone goes back to work.

Time to buy a new laptop and finish the book I started and maybe do some leisurely free lance articles again.

Funny, I retired from the IT department 12 years ago too, working for the same company for 36 years.
Congrats Sld, enjoy it (y), like I am (except I hope my pension is able to keep up with this inflation so I DON'T have to go back to work 😁).

Edit: Meant to say 12 year retired in 2010.

Sld enjoy your retirement Sir,also thank you for your 11 years driving,Too many people see special needs kids and adults as "look they aren't like us" just because they don't "Fit" with what they think is normal on insta,Facebook or whatever they let rule thier lives.Sorry for the bit of a rant,Kate suffers from Epilepsy, Prolactinoma (lump on the brain) and mild learning disability (she puts up with me lol) still love her all the more.
Enjoy more range and gun related stuff Sir

The kids were the reason I ended up
staying as long as I did. The hands some of these kids have been dealt are terrible sometimes I wanted to cry But yet they work so hard and smile and laugh, and be kids like any other. I was humbled and honored to help them.

The money was no where near what I made in IT, but the job fulfilled my soul many times more.

Hug her and love her, she is like anyone , just a few more challenges. And trust me we end up with those as we age.

Thank you Sir,why is it kids or adults who have the worst of situations see the best in everything? Too many who think they are "entitled" to a perfect life should spend a day with them to realise just how lucky they already are

Bless your kind and beautiful soul for what you did for special children.

Sid, when you signed up to take that job I bet you didn't realize that you were joining an order! I was a 30-year member of that order myself as I taught in the classroom as a Exceptional Ed teacher. I spent about 10 years of that time teaching children with emotional disorders where the rubber did meet the road, daily. I bet you found something positive in every kid that got on your bus. As Roadrunner said many of the sped kids are low on the pecking order scale, or as I lament: the last ones picked, but the first ones picked on. Offering a struggling kid a helping hand goes along way to help level the playing field so that he or she can achieve. But I bet you lived that every day. l After a while, it seemed that each year I had the same kids all over again , but they all had different faces. Congratulations on receiving the golden diploma. Yes, it will hit you around Labor Day when you realize part of you is still on the job.

Congratulations! I'm not that far behind you.

You are right sir, thank you for your dedication. I absolutely had no idea what I was in for. Had many kids and learned from them all. I saw the pride in a mothers face when her 10 year old daughter got up of the floor by herself the first time. I wept like a baby the first time I saw a boy stand out of his wheel chair and walk with a walker after having him three years in the chair. I had all three children of one woman, the last this year was born the year I had the first. And I watched a brother and sister with a very rare disease fight every single day from thier wheel chairs. They were in a small U of M study , small because so few living members. They have both exceeded thier life expectations, and are both now struggling in junior college to make the best of a future they likely will never see.

Yeah it changed me... for the better.
