I'm a fan of the XD line, but the .40 S&W XD's always puzzled me a bit. I had gotten used to the general rule for firearms that .40 S&W models have a lower capacity than 9mm versions, but greater capacity than .45 ACP models. In the XD Mod.2 line, the 4" Service Model had a 12-round capacity in .40 S&W, but a 13-round capacity in .45 ACP. In the subcompact models, both the .40 S&W and the .45 ACP had 9 round capacities in the flush mags. The 40 S&W is a proven self-defense round, but if I'm getting equal or less capacity, I will choose the .45 ACP. I can see the .40 S&W models appealing to die-hard fans of the caliber, but the choice of capacity struck me as odd.
