10mm vs 45 ACP: Which Auto Is Best?

I'm of the generation that was issued a .45 in my military service, so in that regard I will admit I'm somewhat biased. I have fired more .45 acp ammo than I would dare to even guess in my lifetime. I do have and enjoy the XDm Elite OSP 4.5 in 10mm and to be fair I have a polymer full size .45 (S&W M&P 45) both are about the same size. I won't admit to how many 1911s I have as my wife may see this article . I guess the cost of ammo may influence the amount of shooting I do with the 10mm? For that reason the .45 edges out the 10mm for me.

Ballistically, 10 & .357M are pretty much the identical in most bullet weights; 10 can use a heavier bullet, but .357 can push lighter bullets faster.

For dangerous game, I’d probably take 10 over .45acp, but I’d take .357 magnum over 10.

For bipedal problems, I’d take .45 over 10…but would, again, take .357 over both.

I'm a life long .45acp guy. My favorite semi-auto cartridge.
I've never owned a 10mm. I have shot a few belonging to other people. I got nothing against it. But it just never caught my interest.

I will say there are few handgun calibers as versatile as the 10mm. I’ve loaded bullets from 135-220grs and the 10 drives them all with authority.

My opinion, fwiw:
Of those three, find the caliber your most comfortable shooting, and work on getting good with it.
The “best caliber” is in fact useless if you’re missing.

I have a couple of 10mm's, one is my S&W 610 and my Xdm Elite Compact, both are nice, but I prefer the 610 due to I can safely shoot 40S&W also through it.

Might try a 10 but my 1911s in .45 are keepers.
