Great story. My father was in the US Navy in WWII, and was a Motor Machinists Mate aboard the USS LSM (Landing Ship Medium) 315 that was one of only 4 of the type that was sold to the Australian ARMY sometime after the war. Renamed the Vernon Sturdee, it and the other ships of the type were armed and served as riverine transport to support the Australian armed forces that Captain Dye spoke of. I spoke with Aussie Dave Perham who wrote a book about his experiences aboard the Vernon Sturdee Back in 2007 while my dad was yet alive. As I recall Dave was also assigned in the engine room as was my father. i contributed a couple of my dad’s photos of the 315 to his book.
