I read the first book when it first came out. I thought it caught the essence of the place. As always a great article by Dr. Dabbs. Anyone interested in this topic should read what in my opinion is the best in depth, first person account about flying Hueys in Vietnam: the 1983 best seller Chickenhawk by Robert Mason
These Hueys were in my unit, The Little Bears, 25th Aaviation Bn. We had a Vietnamese Sun Bear for our mascot, The nose art is a white bear holding a lightening bolt. Don't know what year this photo was taken.Hello all, here is today's article posted on TheArmoryLife.com. Nicely written article!
I flew Hueys my first 12 years in the army. My last 10 I did airplanes. It’s the best helicopter in the world in my opinion.
I want my last flight before I retire to be a traffic pattern in a Huey.

Every time I hear a helicopter my mind goes back to my time in Huey's.I served in both the Marines and Air Force. I maintained and crewed 4 different types of helicopters. I spent the majority of my AF career on UH-1N’s. At one time the AF had single engine Huey’s, the HH-1H. There may be some training Huey’s operated by the AF but I can’t verify that. Now that the N Model is in it’s twilight years, the sound of the Huey will fall silent and is to be replaced by a modern helicopter.
