Santa recently delivered a 1911 A1 Loaded 9mm. When I picked it up from my FFL I noted that the magazine did not insert smoothly, but appeared to hang up on the magazine release. A sharp blow on the base of the magazine was required to seat it. This occurred with both magazines. The FFL said it probably just needed to "wear in". Upon investigation I found an indentation on the top right-hand side of the magazine (see pic 75940). This indentation is there to smoothly guide the magazine release up onto the side of the magazine where it rides down to the slot which locks the magazine into the gun. A close inspection showed several "nicks" on the edge of the magazine on the indentation (see pic 75254) no doubt caused hitting the magazine release. It appeared that there was a manufacturing defect; either the magazine indentation was too small, or the magazine release extended too far into the magazine well. I decided to try modifying the magazines. I took a pair of needle-nose pliers and bent the indentations in a little and now the magazines slide in smoothly. SUCCESS!
I haven't tried other manufacturer's magazines so I can't say if it's a gun problem or a magazine problem. Either way it wasn't caught by QA at the factory.
