20 rd. 5.56 mags

I was browsing around looking for 20 rd. AR mags and it's obvious that A) No one has Gen 2 20 rd. P mags, only Gen 3 and B) they are as expensive or more expensive than 30rd. P mags. This makes no sense to me. Unless it's just because they all seem to be Gen 3. I paid about $11 for all of my 30rd. Gen 2. $13 seems to be the average price for the 20 rd. P mags I can find on line.

I was looking at mags also recently, and I believe (guessing) the Gen 3 mags are more due to them having the improved follower. I stopped at the local Rural King the other day, and they have a large amount of new stock of the Pmags (10, 20, 30 rnd). The only problem is that they were priced (iirc) $4-$7 higher each than if ordered online from MagPul, Amazon, etc. They also had the Hexmag brand, which I'm not familiar with.

It's the same story here. My local gun stores ( The ones that carry AR stuff) are fairly comparably priced on a lot of stuff ( optics, sights, parts, etc.) but they are all really proud of their P mags. When I was getting Gen 2 30 rd. on line for $11, they were all selling them for $16-ish.

I'm not opposed to aluminum or steel, but they all seem to be priced similarly. And I didn't really want to buy one, wait until it gets here, test it and make sure it works, then buy more. At least I already know P Mags work well in my pistol.

Scarcity on the price...they just don’t make as many of them.

If you find the old-style straight aluminum 20rd mags, go with ‘em; they work great.

The straight mags are expensive when you can find them. And there is a lot of internet chatter about them having issues. There's also a lot of guys who say there aren't issues. I would definitely buy some if I could find them reasonably priced.

I gave up on the aluminum mags due to feed lip creep. Once I went to thermold now pmag mags no longer have to deal with adjusting feed lips and jambs. Of course mine were all older Colt mags, no newer aluminum mags. The new polymer mags with steel/aluminum top many are highly pumped on those. But for me the pmags just always work with no problems.

I'm sort of OCD and one way about most things. I tried Amend2 mags and although they all functioned perfectly, several of them didn't drop free of the mag well on their own, so I gave them away. I have about 40 gen 2 P mags and they all function 100% perfectly so I pretty much decided to just stick with them.

I think 20 rd. mags make more sense for the AR pistol and I'd like to stock up on some.

How many mags do most of you have per fire arm? I have about 4 per pistol, 6 or so for pcc and rifle rounds.

5 is a minimum starting point for a handgun for me. The range guns 5 is fine. Anything I carry I am not approaching comfortable levels until I hit 10. ARs, you can never have too many. I have one carbine and one pistol currently and I have about 42 30rd. P Mags.

Also I don't screw around with aftermarket handgun mags. Mec-Gar or whatever. All my handguns sport OEM mags.

Don’t get a 1911...aftermarket mags are your best friend (unless you get a Wilson, that is).

Yeah that is the one exception isn't it. I would guess there are other exceptions too, I just don't happen to have any of those guns.

That said, I have an old Llama Max II double stack ( Commander type 1911 .45) and the only mags that run right in it ( that I have found and tried) are the original 13 rd. mags that came with it.

I would suspect that they’re proprietary, though...they aren’t Para or STI pattern, they’re something different altogether.

Someone here, maybe you, gave me a link to these. I haven't gotten around to picking one up and trying it yet though.

When I bought these Llamas ( we actually bought 3 of them) I had actually ordered something else altogether, but I got them through my friend who was an FFL at the time and when he ran across them he figured I would want them. These were the last of the pre ban ( Clinton assault weapons ban) 13 rounders. Anyway, I immediately bought some aftermarket 10 rd. mags and the guns jammed with all of them. They work perfectly with the OEM mags. Now I'm leery of trying any aftermarket mags in the one I have left. I mean they aren't top shelf 1911s or anything and I don't have any designs on customizing it or having a smith do anything to it. It's not like I would carry it these days. As long as it runs with the OEM mags I'm ok with it. Except I only have 2 of the OEM mags.
