Ayoob: Compact Springfield Echelon 4.0C Review

The compact will quickly become a best seller, think of it the same as a G17 vs a G19 size difference. It has been fun playing legos mixing and matching parts. Like the compact slide with the Floyds Custom Shop comp partially covered by the dust cover. In a year the Echelon series has become a pick your flavor style pistol.

The Echalon is my winter EDC and my hunting carry, exept for hog hunting then I take the XD in 10mm. I will definitely believe that I will buy the Echalon C but when it comes out ported. Just like the Echalon I bought it when it came out, no regrets but now it is in OD green and ported. I don't believe I should have 2 of every gun. Especially when we just got the Hellcat ported which is already, if not the best EDC. I will find out but when the Echalon C comes out ported.

Too many gun tubers don't actually take the time to indicate their hand size and show how much real estate there is between the trigger guard and the bottom of the grip. It would be nice if companies listed that distance in their specs, on top of the overall height. I don't think these will be on display very long in a shop for us to physically hold.
Still wondering when these will be on the California roster. Off to check Ammo Bros. again.

I'm wanting an article or comparison between the Hellcat Pro and this new compact Echelon.

My primary concealed carry is a clean Hellcat Pro. And it's perfect but I also just bought a new full-size echelon and have been using for my introduction into competitive shooting. And I love it. But I can't help to wonder if I should have me this new compact echelon and maybe give my daughter, who has been wanting it, my Hellcat pro. decisions decisions.

I really liked the full size, how it shot, the thought behind the VIS, slide setup/design…. I just didn’t need another full size, mid budget striker fired pistol I had no intention of carrying.
Then this came out.
Went to a local show last weekend, one vendor had it on the table with the 3 dot tritium, came home with me.
Vortex ST up top.. I have about 350 rounds through it so far, zero issues, very good shooter.
I did get some trigger pinch towards the end of the range day. I’m bouncing between the Tyrant and PRP triggers for mine.
I’ve put cheap 115, my 124 reloads, 124gr HSTs… it’s eaten everything without even a hint of any kind of issue.
Waiting for a few more holsters to come out designed for it.. I know the full size holsters fit…but why not get the right fit rather than “it does fit”..

My plan is 1K rounds through it over the next few weeks, put it in the carry rotation.
I agree, it is the Goldilocks size….

Congrats, I'm holding out for the FDE or OD version.

Please explain how the Central Operating Group/Fire Control Unit pistols are a good idea for the U.S. civilian market beyond the possibility of additional colors or minor comfort changes in the chassis design? Insurance if you destroy the chassis?

In countries where there are limits on number of firearms allowed then the COG with SN - Chassis combo makes sense, but if you have to buy a different chassis and slide to get different configurations you will almost match the price of buying another pistol with all the hassle of having to swap the COG. That also depends whether you can even buy the OEM versions as parts if that is what you want. If SA bundled with two chassis and two slide sizes with some discount (a Gear Up promo?) or a compact grip that accommodates a long slide (G49) then maybe.

I’m roughly in the 500 to 750 round range on this pistol now.
Not one single issue. Picked up a Tyrant trigger for it. Very nice, took up almost all of the pre travel, but.. still a very heavy trigger for my taste. For EDC, I like 3.5 to 4# range. This is still just a tick under 5#.
I may take some time to polish up some surfaces, but I fear if I go the PRP spring kit route, it’ll go a little too light…

I so far have an Amazon full Kydex IWB that I trimmed up and cleaned up the nose of (it’s made for a longer 4.5 full).
I bought 1/4” memory foam sheets and cut out/applied to the body side of the holster.
I got my Safariland Incog holster, which is nice. But even with the smallest claw pad on, it’s tedious to get it to sit behind my jeans and a belt, it wants to pinch and move the jeans…
I have a versa on the way in the mail, but I’m really waiting for a hybrid. I’ve always liked a leather backed, half Kydex Shell.
Crossbreed sells one on Springfield’s site, but, even though it’s marked for the 4.0c, I have a feeling it’s geared towards the larger 4.5 full size. I don’t see the specific 4.0c holster on Crossbreed’s site yet.

For me, this is an easier, slightly slimmer/less bulky feeling EDC compared to my C2. Picked up a S&W Comp Carry 2.0 for my “wife”… to carry…lol. Trigger is much better out of the box than the Echelon… and also a good shooter.

It’s that time of the year I’m bored and do a little buy/sell of pistols to shoot. I picked up a couple of winners here in my book.
