Capt. Dale Dye: Christmas at the Con Thien "Hill of Angels"

Thank you for any excellent Christmas story. I was in the USMC infantry for years but only in peacetime. One year, my company was training in Korea during the holidays. We had a plywood mess hall with pallets for flooring. Outside it was raining, cold and endless mud everywhere. Nevertheless, our cooks spent hours preparing a fantastic turkey dinner. Good memories of life in the service.

I was with 9th Mmotor Transport Battalion at Dong Ha and was assigned to units at Con Thien in December 1967. There were two of us assigned for the month and we made the trip from Con Then to Dong Ha and back each day. We always requested security from the grunts which we dropped off at the PX at Dong Ha while we loaded supplies then picked up the Security and back to Con Thien. On one trip the NVA ambushed us just North of the Wash Out. Little did we know what would follow in the January TET offensive.
