.30-06 Rifle: Going Long In .30-Caliber Semi-Autos

There is no doubt that the most highly esteemed '06 is America's cartridge. It has done it all. In fact, after the US Army came out with the '06, North American big game hunters needed no other cartridge. But that would have made for dull and boring campfires.

The reality is the .308 Win is the veritable twin of the '06 in a shorter package. The 7.62 was designed to reliably fire in automatic (as opposed to semi) actions.

The .308 Win has the advantage of inherent accuracy.

The .308 Win seems to be unaffected by barrel length variations. It loses negligible velocity as barrels become shorter.

What the '06 will do, the .308 Win will do.

The .308 Win is extremely popular among Rocky Mountain big game hunters. A .300 Rem Ultra Mag will kill the largest North American big game just as dead as the .308 Win. However, it doesn't take more than a couple Rocky Mountain big game seasons before hunters figure out that a rifle weighing half as much as their mega magnums with identical ability to kill big game makes a lot more sense.

The '06 is the definitive North American big game cartridge. However, if I were to buy another big game rifle, it'd be an 18.5" barrel .308 Win carbine; something like this:
