Case Size Comparison

The .308 Win is larger than .30-30, yet smaller than the 30-06 despite all three using similar diameter bullets. The .308 Win uses a more modern projectile, and the casing holds more powder. Simply put, the .308 is more powerful than the .30-30, it’s larger casing allows the .308 Win to send bullets faster and further.

Apples and oranges............

They both have their place, but 30-30 has no place being compared to .308, they aren't in the same class, even though 308 (as well as 06) can be loaded to 30-30 pressure levels.

The three of them are on the same level as far availability goes, I'll bet the most remote Appalachian general store carries all three rounds.

But as a red blooded American male, I have all three.

That was a decent arrival.

Disclaimer don’t team this as a complaint just when “those guys” talk about 308 stuff gets old.

I was very happy to not read some “308 is good for 1,000 yards” BS that’s not relevant to what real hunting ranges are usually spouted off by some chump that has 1 never **** 1,000 yard in their life let alone tell you what the bullet drop is at 1,000 yards or mil hold over OR even what’s the distance between mil dots at 100 yards let alone 1,000

And I favor the 30-30 in my retired years. Ran a 308 bolt gun for a few years for work great round but if I got one it would be an open sight (maybe red dot) Ruger Scout as I don’t hunt 300 yard fields.

Not all cartridges have close comparisons regardless of platform. Max psi can set them apart of as the amount of powder behind the is also. Then there's the comparison between 6.5creed and 308win........all have a job and some just do it better and more efficient. I hear all so much from 7mil lovers about my 264wm...........theirs is better in their eyes.

I have all three as well, plus a Remington Model 81 in .300 Savage. The 30-30 is well suited as a short distance brush gun. Killed deer with all four calibers. It’s always good to have options!

The old 30/30 has probably killed more deer than any cartridge in existence. It’s a wonderful 150 deer gun in a light lever carbine. Despite those who speak of 5 and 6 hundred yard shots the simple fact is in a large portion of the states (at least east of the river) there are darn few places in the deer woods where you can even see that far😏. I’ve shot my share of deer over the last 62 years. My longest deer shot to date has been 137 paces and That was with a .577 Enfield Artillery carbine, chucking a 530 grain Minnie ball pushed by 68 gr of 3F😊. I’ve taken yotes and whistle pigs out to 450 yards in open fields with a varminter but never hunt those places for deer. Rifle has to match YOUR hunting area/style. That spiffy heavy rifle with a mega scope isn’t much punkins in heavy woods where the longest shot will be 75 or so.🙄

Interesting tid bit. The Montana Department of Corrections until at least the early 1990’s (maybe longer) used the 30-30 as a tower gun and used some Winchester in couple disturbances

Yep. 30-30 is standard issue Missouri deer gun. I hunted the first 15 years of my life with an 1894, no scope. Killed a hell of a lot of deer with that rifle.

The 30-30 is nice when you want something a little less than 308 but a little more than 300BLK and 7.62x39. Yeah sure the 308 will do anything the 30-30 can and more but one of the places I pig hunt the furthest shot is 37 yards because of the thickets and it isn't necessary. Most of the time 300BLK or 7.62x39 is what I take but when we see an extra large bruiser on the game cameras is when I'll grab the 30-30.

I need to get load development done for the 338lm w/300gr fmj's to see how many piggies I can get w/1 shot? Could be fun with the 45-70 also!

I try to use an effective cartridge to put them down but one that also has as minimal recoil as possible so I can get a fast follow-up shot to take another (or more). I usually don't take the 30-30 because working the action takes too much time.
