I recently purchased an all matching Arisaka Type 99 rifle, and I find it historically interesting that the Japaneses wanted to develop a clone to the M1 Garand to compete with it. This was unknown to me, so thanks for posting it Mike.

The Japanese might have had better luck simply using the M1 they captured against the US forces instead of replicating them. The Arisaka could have redesigned to fire semi automatic. If they were really smart they could of have an agreement with Germany to supply them with some of their submachine guns to aid in those banzai attacks
