4 Reasons to carry a Pocket Knife

I was a little disappointed at the reasons as most of them were not daily or even weekly tasks.

I cannot even guess at how many bails of hay I cut the twine on, twice a day, every day for years.
Now I use a knife to open deliveries since much of our shopping is now online.
I also use a knife to open the plastic packages that store bought things now come in.
On camping trips I am usually using fixed blade knives with different knives for different jobs.

One I like especially in non automatic states : https://www.knifecenter.com/item/CI...flipper-knife-d2-satin-blade-blue-g10-handles (I'm not keen on blue - mine is black)

For a general camping knife: https://www.bladehq.com/item--Cold-Steel-SRK-Search-Rescue-Fixed--80436

I agree, there are hundreds of reasons. I believe the author was just trying to state the ones common folks who don’t understand the utility of a pocket knife would kinda understand. I have carried a pocket knife for over 50 years, after watching and learning from my Father. First thing I put in my pocket.

I guess sharpening pencils counts? Sorta? And I guess if you're camping, you're cutting some kindling every day, too? :)

I agree - there's literally as @Bassbob noted hundreds of reasons to carry a pocket-knife, even for nerdy white-collar pencil-necked paper-pushing "city folk" like me. I find that so many of my daily tasks are made both more efficient and safer with a sharp pocket-knife.

The fact that there are people who look down on folks for carrying knives is disturbing.

I think that some of this is due to a lack of understanding - and perhaps also inherited attitudes from the previous generation(s) who are the belief/value-shaping adults that a child is exposed to. I think that this is one thing that we can help change, by calling attention to the fact that there's a friendly and well-adjusted person right next to them when: "Hey, you need a knife for something? Well, I've got one right here, lemmie help you!"

come on.. there are countless reasons to carry a cutting instrument. I honestly cant imagine how anyone gets by without carrying one. I am on my third SOG FlashII but still using the same ole sears stockman that I have had since the late 1970s. There are 2 things I do not leave the house without, one is a knife and the other is a handkerchief.

I gotta admit, after carrying a pocket knife, or knives, every day for probably the last 50 years I have not thought about the reasons to carry one. I have occasionally thought of one or two not to, but always regained my sanity before walking out the door. I have had to leave them in the vehicle a time or two going into the courthouse or county offices.

Luckily I have not flown since 9/11...

One reason NOT to carry a knife in a pocket - see local laws.

For example in VA it is illegal:
  • It is illegal to conceal carry a dirk
  • It is illegal to conceal carry a bowie knife
  • It is illegal to conceal carry a switchblade knife
  • It is illegal to conceal carry a machete
  • It is illegal to conceal carry a ballistic knife
  • It is illegal to conceal carry throwing stars or oriental darts
  • It is illegal to conceal carry any knife of a like kind to one of the above listed knives

Because of a knife, I can lose the right to carry a gun. More, the "like kind" phrase is left to the jury to interpret.
No, thank you.

You should move. Every single one of those things is perfectly legal here in Missouri.

I have carried a pocket knife for 50 years also I feel naked without it I went to a special show once I was on Bart that’s a public transportation in California you definitely need it there but I couldn’t enter the show with it and it was one of many favorite ones of mine luckily I explained it to the guard he had me hide it under a tent area and when I got out of the show it was still there

Not really:

Limits on Carry

  • You may conceal carry any pocketknife with a folding blade less than four inches
  • You may not conceal carry any other knife in Missouri, on your person or in your vehicle
  • You may open carry any knife that is legal own
In the case of State v. Dowdy, the Court found that a paring knife, concealed on Dowdy’s person, was a knife under Missouri law, and could not be conceal carried.

PS: Those limits in VA are about concealed carry. As in a pocket. Almost same for you in MO, only that you can have a <4" folding blade.

With all that you listed there are still plenty of knives that would be legal for you to carry and use .
