40 S&W in a 1911

Well, because of the weight of a 1911, I got the notion of building a 1911 in a 40S&W in stead of a 9mm. As a single stack, it’s my favorite out doing a 45 ACP and 9mm for my purposes. Try it but use a ramped barrel. I also have the same pistol in 357Sig with a barrel swap!

.357 Sig may not run; there’s a few issues getting that bottleneck cartridge to accept the fairly steep feed angle in a 1911 (I know it’s an issue in 10mm 19/2011’s, and I don’t see any reason a single stack would be different).

But you could easily step up to 10mm.

since the double stacks are single fed there wouldn't be any difference (yes, that's me agreeing with you).

do all 1911/2011's have ramps on the barrels? i've only owned 1 and most likely never own another, but the ria 10 ultra fs hc has been calling me :( .

My Para P16.40 did. I wanted to convert it to .357, but after looking into it…the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze.

Sig BRIEFLY offered a .357Sig 1911, but discontinued it quickly; rumor was they were very difficult to get to run well.

My dealer has a RIA 10mm DS w/threaded barrel…I’m seriously considering.

is that 1 like the hc w/16 round mag

My only experience with a 1911 in 40 was a Para ORD P16 Linited for USPSA when they only had 2 divisions. Great shooting gun my only gripe (other then the QC when they applied the finished had a purple tint when the sun hit it right) was the ramped barrel was WAY too strep. So steep in fact (no secret service puns) I had severe bullet setback so I sold it to a gun shop guy that was wanted it as a project gun and went with a Glock 35

So just something you might look at incase mine wasn’t a fluke

It wasn’t a fluke.

Same feedback when I brought my P16.40 to a HIGHLY regarded 1911 gunsmith to get converted.

I was told it was possible, but…it could be very expensive to get it reliable.

My Ruger SR 1911 10mm , in 357 sig runs fine but I use the 40 more. My 38 Supers run fine too as I have 30 years of use in many. Not sure of the reason a 38 super would run and a 357 sig being a bottle neck would not. I will continue shooting. The ramp is sloped properly and the case is still semi supported with no problems after 124s at 1300+fps in a 5”barrel. Shoot on😁
