45 GAP, the Glock 37, & the Caliber That Should Have Been

Came across this article on the G37, 45GAP. I never shot one or handle one, I have shot the .357sig which I kind of liked.

45 short acp would be less of a seller, so 45gap sounds better? The 357sig is a hotrod of a round and better than a 9mm mag. I have a g31 and a p226 in that cartridge and love hitting targets 150 yards +. Recoil is slight and not much different than a 9mm, especially in a 226. 100 yards isn't even a challenge. I think the gap would be good for the compact and smaller for those wanting a 45cal? 10mm wasn't very popular, but look at it now!

FACT:
The 45 GAP cartridge was a superior round compared to the 45 acp. It had (has) the same performance as the 45 cap +P but with a shorter COAL than the 9x19mm.

It simply did catch on because America is so proud of our beloved 45acp. And it didn't get a chance when everyone was in fear it would replace the historical 45 acp.

It is just a better round.

It’s a lot higher pressure than .45+P, though, so…is it REALLY superior? Shouldn’t it exceed acp+p performance?

As mentioned in the article…can’t get it in more than 10rd capacity. Why muck with that when I have 13rd mags for my Glock 21? Heck, a Glock 30 has the same capacity, and is a compact..

Additionally, Springfield’s ORIGINAL XD45 in GAP only had 8 rounds…you get MORE in the current XD45 Compact.

It was Glock betting that the 94AWB was going to be extended…which was kinda against US gun owner's best interests, no?

I wouldn’t say 45 GAP was Glock banking on anything about the AWB getting extended. It was more department driven. There was a want back then to get 45 power in a 9mm platform (much like the 10mm in a 9 size a decade or so before aka 40 S&W.

The right people were in place to make 45 Gap happen because at least 3 maybe 4 State Police agencies jumped onto it.

It just never caught on like the 357 Sig did (TX, Virginia and Secret Service with the Fed Air Marshals was a big boost to 357 SIG while it ran its course)

Not really. Cops could get .45’s, and with higher capacity than 10 with the Glock 21. Why lose capacity going to the GAP?

In the early 90’s, .45 was on its way out. 1911’s weren’t super popular, and all the rage was about capacity.

Then…94AWB. No more than 10 rounds were allowed…so the thought process pivoted to “If I can only have 10, I want the 10 big rounds, not 10 small rounds”. The .45 came back (and with it the 1911), and Glock figured to capitalize on it…put out .45 power is a slightly smaller package. In that role, the .45GAP was perfect…

Until you could have more than 10 rounds again beginning in September of 2004. Then…it made no sense whatsoever.

I for one had high hopes for the .45GAP. The SA EMP series just fits my hand so much better than a full-sized 1911. My "dream gun" would be an EMP-based Officer's Model with a Commander-length barrel and alloy frame. What a perfect carry gun!

Sorry about the spelling errors, I was tired and falling asleep while writing it lol.

I just blame the auto correct or auto insert on my phone…….😬
I could've or edited it the next after waking up but edit option wasn't available. Haha I started typing doze off, type some more and doze off, this happened repeatedly. I'm start to doze off again, I'm out before more crazy.
