5.56 vs. .223: Which Can I Shoot?

Definitely a good read! As I was taught way back in two-thousand and one seven (hopefully correctly), if you purchase a rifle chambered in 5.56 (a la Ruger AR 556), then you can run either 2.23 or 5.56 safely. Which begs the question: what is the point of 223 wylde?

Since you asked, I guess not much difference, but the article linked below is a good description of the 223 Wylde compared to the 5.56.

Wilson Combat .223 Wylde 1-8 twist love this AR and no special mags needed

No Read. Did not answer the question. Which can you shoot. .223 in .556 /556 in 223 barrel. which can you shoot in which. Author wrote a lot but never answered the question.
Do not use 5.56 in a barrel marked only .223 because the 5.56 is a higher pressure round. .223 can be used in a 5.56 barrel which is found on most AR platform rifles. .223 wylde is ok to shoot 5.56 though. Pretty confusing I know...😁👍

Simple, you can't shoot 5.56 in a 223 barrel. You can shoot 223 in a 5.56 barrel and with 223 wylde you can shoot both. Some rifle maybe stamped 223, but check the barrel stamping.

This is total wrong:

Although .223 Remington cartridges will fit inside a 5.56 NATO chamber (and vice versa), the two chambers are quite different.

My Remington rifle in 223 doesn't like 5.56 it goes in, but the bolt as to be forced close. Making me think the 5.56 is hitting the landing groove on the barrel.

Are you talking about the original article? It stated that your not to shoot 5.56 out of a rifle chambered .223. If your rifle is chambered 5.56/.223 Wylde than 5.56/.223/.223 Wylde is safe to fire.

I have a Mini-14 which I love dearly,I wonder why Ruger didn't make it where you can shoot 5.56?Money I guess.also my Ar-15 has a 1-7 twist ,does that mean I need lighter grain ammo?

The newer Mini-14s come stamped 5.56 and I've heard that older Mini's are able to safely shoot 5.56 unless it's the .223 target model. Disclaimer: I would highly recommend calling Ruger to verify if this is true before attempting.

There is no such thing as a .223 Wylde cartridge; .223 Wylde is a chamber reaming that is a hybrid of 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington that allows the former to be safely used while keeping the superior accuracy of the latter.

100% correct. Now we have a member that know what he talking about. I have a 223 Wylde because of ammo choice. At the PD range you can't bring ammo pass a marked spot. I didn't know if the County or the State was bring 223 or 556 for training.

Check the marking on your barrel, because at one time it was against the law to import a 5.56 rifle into this country. Being that 5.56 is a Military ammo and 223 was a hunting round, so they stamped the rifle 223 with a 5.56 barrel. The same with 7.52x51 and 308
