49th anniversary of Edmund Fitzgerald sinking

A lot probably never heard of this but to those of us who live on the Great Lakes and with the big freighters this was a big thing. I grew up with men who worked the lakes and I remember talking to Gordon Lightfoot about it when I helped on his boat one summer for a race.

I don't think I know a single person who hasn't heard of this.

When I was stationed in Duluth I enjoyed going to the lift bridge to watch the various ships come in & out of the harbor.

Watching the BIG 1,000 ft. ore boats pass by only a few feet away was cool & the seamanship of aligning those big boats to go thru the lift bridge channel was impressive, as well as the sharp east turn when one passed thru and headed for the ore docks.

There's a small museum at the base of the lift bridge which has some EF artifacts there in honor of the ship.

Inside the harbor on the MN side there's an old ore boat as a museum that you can go thru. The EF was similarly built.

The BIG lake gets mean at times and unfortunately the EF got caught in one of it's temper tantrums.

That was incredible thank you for sharing Bob.
You're welcome.

My dad was a big fan when I was growing up. I have a guitar he bought ( an Ovation) because Gordon played the same one. It's a great sounding guitar, especially for recording.

Even much later in life when the visual difference between young Gordon Lightfoot and old Gordon Lightfoot was stark, he could still bring it live. Amazing singer/songwriter. Back in the day when my mom took up drums I would come over one night a week and jam with her and my dad ( dad on bass, me on guitar) and one of the songs we regularly played was another Gordon Lightfoot classic, Sundown.

Of course we also did Smoke Two Joints by Sublime, but we countered it with some Everly Brothers, Smokey Robinson and Beach Boys tunes.
