Do you need a weapon mounted light?

Are they necessary? What should you look for in one? What do all those damnable looms and candles (lumens and candela) mean?

The author of the article cited Arisaka Defense among the "accessories" makers.

It should be noted that Arisaka's light modules come at the behest of an industry staple, Malkoff Devices. Gene Malkoff is among on of the most respected individuals in the white-light flashlight world, and his LED-based heads (and full flashlights) have been retrofitted for use with [now-]legacy Surefire lights for going on a decade and a half. As a matter of fact, rewind to the old Magpul Dynamics "The Art of the Tactical Carbine, Volume II," which was released in 2009, and both Costa and Haley talked specifically about the Malkoff LED-heads in the "Lights & Lasers" section. Similarly, the long-ongoing thread on CandlePowerForums and Pistol-Forums, each filled with enthusiast-level discussion, testifies to the capabilities of his works.

Even today, as Modlite and Cloud Defensive have become household names, it's surprising that Malkoff's products still only present in the background. Five years ago, they were unicorns, only about as frequently seen in training classes as true-customs like those from Oveready.
