i am not sure where i read it, maybe here on this site, but someone complained about the mag release button on his 1911?
so taking a que from that, i tried all 12 of my 1911's for mag release.
i gotta say, not too many were as easy as some.
in other words, my 2 Dan Wesson's, were pretty much on an easier side to push that button. ''where as" my Tisas Tanker and Sig STX, were like i needed the incredible Hulk to push that button, but at the range, i never really gave it that much thought.
at my advanced age, and small hands, as the original poster mentioned, it just isn't always that easy, to push that release.
in the advice to him, someone mentioned Wolff springs.
i followed the link in the advice to Brownells (that was in the original story) and the Wolff mag release springs were still available.
i had to order 2 packets, as only 10 come in a packet.
(so now i have 8 left over), but given i love the 1911, i am sure those will be used up in time.
anyway, ALL my 1911's got the new #3 release springs, and each gun is really great now at releasing the mags.
but some things to add
1) the Tisas was so darned hard to push in the button to unlock the release, and so much so, that when i went to remove that tiny screw...(once removed from the frame)
"whoosh" went the spring, and tiny screw and the "lock piece"
but i found all 3 pieces in like 2 seconds.
(all the other mag release buttons and tiny screws were super easy to deal with)
2) my Kimber Custom II, was the one and ONLY 1911 that required a #6 torx bit, to remove that locking screw, all others, a simple flat blade driver bit.
now here, is where i am glad, i bought that supplemental Wheeler hollow ground bit set that arrived a few days ago, as it HAD the #6 bit..!!!!
3) my Sig STX, my newest 1911....well i found that the factory magwell was loose as well. so i simply added a drop of Blue Loctite to the screw
the entire replacement of all the springs took about 35 minutes, given i had bagged the original ones, and placed all those in my "spare parts" case.
good thing i read that thread, who ever mentioned "softer" springs and Brownell's, thank you
