While I soak in the hot tub for the first time in 10 day my mind wanders, like a good soak encourages. I am far from a legal expert, constitution wise or other, but I have what is not a good thought pop into my head.

I suppose recent events in Isreal and now in Maine combined and voila... If, any terrorist acts do occur on US soil, could the current administration use emergency powers to confiscate firearms unilaterally for "the greater good". Effectively bypassing the constitution.

At least make an attempt to do so?

In theory. In practice it will be impossible.

Agreed, just wondered if it is something they might try.
I wouldn't put it past them. Think about this. We all know that politicians, even the vast majority of those with Rs behind their name, are self serving, greedy, power hungry, lying pieces of crap. Right ?

At any time, even allowing for 10% being holdouts, congress can decide to make ANYTHING illegal and scores of government agents will follow orders.

there are groups in this country that would like the opportunity to do that and sadly, i believe would welcome an act of terror on american soil to do it. in their minds, those affected by any terror attack would simply be collateral damage in the effort to confiscate all firearms. yes, i am this cynical.
now. would they be successful in doing so? i don't think so.

I would think trying to round up guns from lawful firearms owners would make terrorism look like a walk in the park.
Yep, if we are under attack from terrorists that would be like opening up another front. But, it would be like our current gov't to take advantage of the situation and collect the guns of law abiding citizens while we were being attacked by terrorists. I suspect that in Maine at this moment it would be almost suicide for a stranger to walk up and pound on someone's front door!

Hurricane Katrina, 2005, New Orleans Police started confiscating guns from private citizens. There was a huge fuss and pretty much all the courts said it was unconstitutional.
So yes, it has been tried. A lot of folks who had their guns illegally seized never got them back.

can they? yes
Would it come from white house by way of E.O? most likely
would congress fluster buss and do nothing but talk? YES YES YES
could ATF figure out who has what in a timely manner ? NO NO NO
Would ATF get IRS involved if they couldn't get going fast enough? YES
would most firearm owning persons voluntarily turn them in? Probably not
would they go after criminals first...easy ? NO NO NO
would they figure out a way to go after legal owners first? YES
would americas #1 domestic terror group (FBI) somehow figure out they could go door to door and do illegal searches? YES
would same group scrubb social media sites to update the list they have already? YES
Would same group ignore politicians that own firearms? YES if they pay the FBI in return favors
Would this be the last straw on law abiding citizens to cause an all out revolt? could be

Mew Mexico tried it just recently and it got shot down immediately

Also, America’s vast population that owns firearms is what keeps other countries from doing large scale ill will.
The Cartels for example would own even more power and grip in cities and towns if the population wasnt armed. Armed homeowners are what keeps criminals from going willy nilly.

Except deep blue areas, and as you can see, have firearms prohibited and huge crime problem

Thank you Grayfox. I was trying to remember the hurricane. A lot of people had their guns taken. With no way to protect themselves from looters, they were robbed. But photos of Sean Penn walking the streets with a 12 ga & bodyguards was ok.
