Advice on changing the grip safety

Hello. I have a Springfield 1911 Range Officer Target in 9mm. The one found here:

I really love this gun except for the grip safety and the "nub" at the bottom of it. I find it uncomfortable and would prefer a "smooth" finish in a matching color.

Any recommendations on where to purchase these? Also, is this a fairly simple DIY project or should a gunsmith handle it?

Thanks for reading.

It will need fitted, actually there is no drop in parts like most state, minor fitting will be needed. The speed bump is there so the safety gets activated better then the smooth type, plus modifications void the warranty, just an FYI

Wilson Combat offers a few grip safeties that have a smooth bump rather than ribbed, knurled, checkered or whatever. (Sometimes called ‘memory bumps’ and sometimes advertised as ‘extended’ for more assurance the safety will DISENGAGE when you need it to).

I think it’s possible that one of Wilson’s could be machined or filed down then polished to blend in. Or at least minimize the irritation of the bump. You might give them a call.
As Anni mentioned above, there’s the warranty to consider. Occurs to me also that the ‘liability’ (for lack of a better word) for inability of the gun to operate properly when needed will also be on you.
Personally, I advise against it.

is this your first ever 1911 styled gun..??

if so, that/those "memory bumps" is normal, and makes sure that you fully depress the grip, for shooting.

i'd not mess with it unless that 1911 you have is solely for the range, and not for self defensive carry.

also too, it does void any warranty, if you switch it out..

suppose for some reason there is a factory recall on THAT particular gun (been known to happen) and you send it in, with the modified safety they might even void the recall as well......or maybe they will install the correct grip safety, and bill you for that..???

you wanna chance that.>???

you could try "shooters gloves" to see if the padding in those helps you.

I have 4 other 1911's sitting in the safe and none have a bump as prominent as this one and none hurt my hand like this one does when shooting. I am able to shoot all of those pistols with no problems without gloves. Only this one do I and a couple of my buddies immediately notice digs in more than my others. This is my only Springfield 1911.

Appreciate the responses.

I found a thread where someone had the same issue and a responder noted this site.

I wonder if their smooth one is an option and would still work.

This is a range only gun for me. I have other 1911s but none that I notice like this one. I may have to leave it as-is but I don't enjoy shooting this one as much with the bump. Thanks.
