I really like the AK platform. I only have "cheap" AK's from Palmetto State and Century, but they have both run just fine on a diet of Russian steel-cased ammo. I'd love to have a higher-end Russian AK one day, but it's just not financially feasible right now.
I have always found it amusing how every review of an AK that I have seen includes a "Torture Test." It's cool to know that the guns can handle that kind of treatment, but I could never imagine the situation where I would actually treat any of my guns that way. I'm reasonably certain that my rifle would never see that kind of abuse, even it was actually used in combat. Maybe I'm the oddball, but I spent many years among men and women equipped with government-issued rifles, and I never saw any one of them treat their weapon in any way remotely resembling the average torture test.
