Ammo Shortage May Last Until 2021

The weak link in ammo supply chain are "primers". Things don't go bang w/o primers.

There are only three plants that make them in the USA - ATK (CCI/Federal, Winchester & Remington). USA ammo manufacturers (big & small) that aren't part of those three only get theirs from those three.

All three of those plants are at 100% production 24/7.

A very reliable source told me today that the ammo availability won't get better until the primer availability gets better. What I heard today goes past 2021.

Plus, the biggest run is on 9mm & .223/5.56.

It's what I believe as well, in that shortages will last into 2021. LGS I stopped off yesterday, had 9mm and 7.63x39, but no 300 Blackout, or .223 / 5.56. No revolver ammunition at all, and little quantity of .40 & .45. Not sure about .308 or 10mm, but my salesman buddy said they could get most ammunition in small quantities, but it went as fast as they got it.

My source got a pallet of 12 ga OO buck in and it was gone within hours,

Hunting ammo still available in my area, but anything semi-auto/revolver related is only dribbling in in small amounts.

Also, plain old shotguns are highly in demand. I sold an excess 590 last week for a good fair price.

IMO with Trump getting re-elected we're looking at 2022, and if senile/corrupt Biden/Harris wins, way past that.

Store that I go to was always very well stocked. Now they have limits on everything. Most of the personal defense stuff (what there is of it) has a limit of one per. First it was .22. Now it seems to be everything else.

I can get .22 all day long, so I have begun to shoot my M&P15-22 every week. Getting real darn good at free handing the rifle. May become my new favorite shooter for varmits and range time
I like mine. Fortunately I checked the Bolt face with the plastic gauge they sent me (my serial number was one of the ones that need to be checked), and mine was correct and not one of the safety recalled one that caused Project Appleseed to ban this rifle's use. Not sure if they are still banned, but the bolt face check was simple and I opted for that vs sending the bolt back to S&W to do the check. It's fun to shoot and very accurate.

Safety Alert Notice:

Thanks. I never knew. I’ll have to check mine

No problem Killer. I came across it seeing an article on Project Appleseed banning it. Doing a few more searches on why, and I came across the problem and how (at first) S&W denied one existed (I don't think S&W even issued a recall, just a safety alert). The issue with the 15-22 going full auto, injured some (I don't believe there were any deaths), and would happen on occasion while other times functioning normally. It would do this without the trigger being pulled (except for the first shot), and I believe it occurred at least once after a shooter put down the rifle and was walking away it suddenly went full auto. Luckily, it was pointing down range when this occurred.
It's an easy check if it's one of the potential rifles that can experience the issue, and it gave me piece of mind knowing it shouldn't occur with the one I own.

Well, sure sounds like most of my shooting in next calendar year will be with my stock of several thousand rounds of .22LR. Its not the same as shooting my EDC 9mm or .380acp, but at least it keeps up trigger discipline and marksmanship.

I am supposed to help my dad pick out a 9mm in the next week or two. I may encourage him to get something else based on ammo availability.

Just picked up 500 rounds of Federal 55G FMJBT 5.56 Ammo for $350 from bulkammo.com they also have 9mm 1000 rounds for $300.
Also, why when times are normal, you buy ammo monthly and stockpile. When times get lean, the long time shooters dont have to endure ammo shortage.
I strictly try to buy ammo for friends and family at this point. I have the time to check daily for those I know who cant “dive in” to a store at a moments notice. I have a 5 person list of family/friend ammo to buy on site. Always told them, buy low. Save later

The local Academy manager told me that they have people lined up every morning, and that even with the 3-box limit they are sold out of 9 mm, 380 acp, 40 S&W, 45 acp, and .223/5.56 within minutes. This doesn't leave most working people a chance to buy any of the popular calibers. I would like to see the stores out here stagger the times that they put ammo on the shelf to give the "Essentials" who can't work from home an opportunity. I know its easier to stock everything overnight, but doing this during a shortage just encourages hoarders. I normally wouldn't care, but with every online ammo dealer being out-of-stock the big box stores are the only real option.
