Fix the Long-Range Combat Search-and-Rescue Deficit in the Pacific

The United States is not prepared to rescue downed aviators in a potential conflict with China. New operational concepts and platforms can meet this challenge before it is too late.

One reason the US-2 is so expensive is due to the very low production rate/numbers.

If a US company got the rights to license build it and make some minor improvements (i.e. the Collins NP2000 8-bladed C-130J props, both the C-130J and the US-2 use the same RR AE-2100 engine-diff sub types) three hardpoints per side for aerial refueling pods, ordnance hard points and C-130J-wing type extra fuel tanks and turn the outrigger floats into optional fuel tanks. A high production order should drop per unit costs.

Figure 2: Map showing the relative range of a rescue helicopter versus the US-2 seaplane. Range circles are approximate. V-22 range based on MV-22 in ferry configuration with max internal fuel (auxiliary tanks). Note: its actual radius of operation is likely to be significantly smaller (approximately 500 miles unrefueled, in line with the HH-60).
