I remember when an F16 went down in the Pacific ocean while stationed in Japan. If it wasn't for the Japan Self Defense Forces that pilot would have had a long row home. He said they landed right beside him in one of their float planes. We didn't have any.

One reason the US-2 is so expensive is due to the very low production rate/numbers.

If a US company got the rights to license build it and make some minor improvements (i.e. the Collins NP2000 8-bladed C-130J props, both the C-130J and the US-2 use the same RR AE-2100 engine-diff sub types) three hardpoints per side for aerial refueling pods, ordnance hard points and C-130J-wing type extra fuel tanks and turn the outrigger floats into optional fuel tanks. A high production order should drop per unit costs.
