The Colt Model 1971 was meant to be Colt’s improvement over the design of the M1911. It was developed when the Dept of Army issued the first solicitation for a new modern pistol to replace their huge stocks of aging Model 1911A1 pistols.

Interesting, that seems like it has internal rail system, similar to that of a CZ 75. Which came out 4 years later. Which doesn’t seem like a common design, I only seen it on cz75 and it’s clones.

The S&w 645 didn’t have this rail system but other then that very similar otherwise.

While this particular gun may not have been popular I wonder if it didn’t inspire some other designs.

The BHP has an internal rail system.

Interesting, never heard of it either. Definitely seems to me to have influences from the model 39 and HiPower. Wasn't the m39 developed originally for Army pistol trials in the 50s or 60s which went no where? Am guessing someone at Colt took notice and liked some of the features.
