Army CID Investigating 98 Missing 1911s From CMP

The federally chartered Civilian Marksmanship Program could be in hot water after an audit found nearly 100 pistols missing.

"The Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division has been notified of a significant number of 1911A1 pistols reported missing from the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) located in Anniston, Alabama, between September 2019 to March 2022," CID spokesman Keith E. Smith told local news outlets in Alabama.

At least 98 of the guns are listed as unaccounted for when compared to inventory reports – and may have vanished years ago.

Anniston, Alabama! That's where I did my Basic Training (Ft. McClellan) in 1980. Clinton closed that base down. It's probably where the CMP armory is located.

The main headquarters of the CMP is in Anniston which includes three retail stores; the main "South Store" in Anniston, Alabama, the "North Store" at Camp Perry - Port Clinton, Ohio, and the Talladega store at the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park in Alabama.

I'm more inclined to believe the pistols went missing while still in Army storage. They just sat in warehouses for many years. It would have been fairly easy for one to disappear every now and then. Over many years that could add up. After all, they've been in storage for almost 40 years now.
CMP receives these pistols in big crates full of them. One missing here and there wouldn't likely be missed.

To GRAYFOX, you are absolutely right! Were the pistols "HANDS ON" inventoried before shipping? The CMP receives the 1911s in large crates and meticulously inspects each one. If unserviceable parts are discovered, they don't just trash the complete firearm. Also these pistols would have been subjected to possibly numerous depot overhauls in the US or abroad, creating the "MIXMASTERS" arriving at the CMP. While the serial number on the frame is the ultimate identifier it would be possible to search for a Colt serial# erroneously recorded as a Remington Rand serial#, especially if a portion of the serial number ranges assigned to manufacturers happened to be duplicated. MADNESS I say! Utter MADNESS ! Did the Army find the 31 SIGS missing from Ft. George ? Just asking.
