A new Extreme Long Range Sniper Rifle could replace .50 caliber Barrett and Mk 15 rifles in use with U.S. special operations forces.

With their 2,500 meter parameter it doesn't state what effective range! Plenty of guns can meet that range with accuracy. As far as energy on target it'll be less if not using a 50bmg. When it comes to drop/trajectory a lesser caliber with a longer bullet about 100grs less (such as the 416B, but is 200grs less and more) would be better. 525-575 with a .427-460cal would be the range to be. With load data on the 50bmg it has a test barrel of " and with a 750gr bullet it's barely 2,800fps (ME @ 13,055). At 2 miles it's like mortaring in a projectile, because the drop in a bullet of that weight and velocity severely drops. Sure, the energy at that distance is hard to beat! using quick load and quick target to get estimations on drop with highest velocity (2,792) and ME of 12,980 @ 2,500 meters drop is 3,565.8" (297.15') it's velocity is just over supersonic (1,073fps depending on atmospheric conditions) with energy on target @ 1,919. QT stops @ 2,500 meters, so I can't go further than that.

I seem to have a case of deja vu. Several years ago, and maybe more actually, this was tossed about and people were saying go with the 41 caliber, then Barrett's .338 Lapua Mag was supposed to be the one. I swear defense journalism or DoD itself loves to do the "run stuff up the flagpole and see who salutes" better than anyone or anything I know. Just do it, test it and field it and wake me when it's finished.

Especially if it's at someone else's expense!
