Behind the Bullet: .22 Hornet

When I was a young boy I shot a few deer with my .22 Hornet Winchester Model 54 rifle but only headshots this is an old cartridge 1930S era and rifle 40-grain bullets the rifle had no kick at all its was very accurate and it downed several coyotes and groundhogs. In the late 60's I went with the .17 Remington centerfire and after about 2500 rounds the barrel was burned out so I traded it off I went with a Sako .22-250 and then on to the .223 for varmints and I still use the .223 /5.56 for varmint hunting and have racked up several Ferrel Hogs & Coyotes and even Deer with the .223 / 5.56 cartridge..223 40 grain to 77 grain is my favorite varmint cartridge 2nd to the .308 / 7.62 Nato. 90 grain up to 200 grain. I once have seen a guy at the local range with a Scoped Thompson contender single-shot pistol and he had several barrels for it one of them was the .22 Hornet .218 bee, .22 jet, and several other varmints cartridges and the length of the barrels ranged from 8 3/8 " to 18 1/2 " He also had Revolver calibers 41 Magnum,44 Magnum & .357 Magnum & a 30-30 barrel. He said he had about 20 barrels in all.

My dad always used the .218bee for ground hogs, I started and used a Ruger M77 Target in .220Swift for hunting ground hogs. Those were the days, now where I live, no place to hunt anymore.....all oil & gas fields now since all the fracking going on in Ohio.

excellent choice I would like to do some groundhog hunting they are just not many here in the south. Born here in the South I grew up in central Connecticut until age 17 .back then you could go on a farmer's land and hunt them he was happy to see you. but not now the Farms and the pastures are all gone and 2 million dollar homes sit on the hunting grounds of my youth. Now the PETA and the commie democrats that control the Connecticut Sheepeople have just about done away with any varmint hunting with the extreme gun laws you can't do anything like we can do in the South Today.
