Bolt stuck open once in a while

Is it normal for bolt to stay open (without mag inserted) as it's binding until a little push to the operating rod? I disassembled the rifle, cleaned/oiled it and rack it back/forth for about 100 times. It losen up a bit but still hangs, if I sling shot it it doesn't hang.

This is my first M1A and not familiar with it, any/all input is much appreciated!

How many rounds through the rifle?
The more rounds will slightly loosen things up, also I use red Mobile 1 synthetic grease in the areas of the OP Rod operation to smooth things up.

Thanks for the welcome!

I have not ran any ammo through it yet! Waiting to find deals on ammo then find time to get out there and send some down range!

What's the decent prices for 308 ammo? $0.80 a round?

Ok well you have to put some rounds through that puppy before you worry about something, my M1A is the standard and loves to eat….

But you will find that every gun is different and what some function ok with some don’t so don’t buy a lot of one manufacturer’s loads or grain weights until you figure that out.

and as the picture so clearly indicates-stick with full metal jacketed ammo.

Without a magazine, lock your bolt to the rear. Pull the handle slightly to the rear and let go.

If the bolt goes into battery, you are fine. Never ride the bolt home.

The M14 needs very little grease. None in cold weather.

The bible is FM 23-8. Chapter 5 shows the important grease points.

FM 23-71 will help you at the range. Chapter 3 covers the sights.

When your brain can't handle any more, we dumb things down a bit on this thread...

Thanks, I took it apart again and greased it. The bolt went into battery with no issue! Bolt never had issue going into battery just that Op rod doesn't move back/forth smoothly and it may not be that way so after sending several hundred rounds through it it may losen up.

Appreciate the info!

Everyone has there own way of doing things like cleaning and oiling/greasing, read your owners manual on what Springfield suggest and then add into that your way, don’t let people tell you what to do and not do.
