Bushing removal problem

I just purchased an EMP 9mm w/3" barrel and want to get it cleaned and lubed before taking it to the range. Problem is I can't remove the bushing so that the barrel will slip through the slide opening. I don't want to nick it up but even with a plastic tool I can't seem to make it budge. Anyone here experience this problem?

Are you turning it the right way? 1/4 turn clock-wise looking at the muzzle end.

Start by resting the heel of the gun on a table so both hands may be used. With the thumb, press inward on the knurled end of the recoil spring plug (30) while at the same time rotating the barrel bushing (2) one-quarter of a turn clockwise to free the plug and recoil spring (35) assembly (Fig. 1). Be careful, as the spring is under considerable tension.

As you use the pistol the busing will loosen up, but if it is tight you may have to man handle it with the bushing tool. With customers at the range I have had to use a delrin (plastic) punch to move it back and forth.

Fixed it--I have a set of Wheeling Engineering punches. In the kit is a plastic punch (if you could call it that) the exact diameter needed. SO I took the mallet--soft plastic head part and gently tapped the bushing out. Thanks for your responses!! Just a matter of me having the correct tool but forgetting I actually had it!

Wrong bushing. The EMP employs a different bushing than the full-size 1911s. Anyway, I took care of the problem but thanks for your early response.

I didn't think that EMPs had barrel bushings. Don't they have "bull" barrels?
You are correct--the bushing is for the recoil spring assembly--if it can't be removed then the barrel will not be able to pass through the opening. And yes, it is a bull barrel. Thanks for your response.

Oh, I know exactly what you're talking about now. I have a Kimber Custom Compact, which had a similar setup.
