Busting Handgun Caliber Myths

Meh…

Seen this one before.
Starts out with some interesting statistical data on handgun caliber comparisons (hint: read the title/subject !), and wanders into rifles, shotguns, bug out/concealabilty, body armor etc etc.
The failure rate info is, to me at least, particularly suspect.

The problem is the difficulty in establishing ‘control’ parameters.

Just my 2c….

This video was significantly more in-depth than most on the topic, even if some of the statistics are a bit suspect. I appreciate when people take the time to collect actual data and explain their conclusions. This is one area with too many variables to reach any definite conclusions, but I appreciate when sources take the time to do any sort of scientific research, rather than simply say, "Everybody knows _______". I still firmly believe that any caliber can be effective with proper shot placement, but I like my odds with traditional self-defense calibers.

The popular pistol calibers have been evolving for years into the lethal tools they have become. They have had lots of load and bullet development because they had passed the test of time. They sell reliably year after year. Some new round could appear tomorrow, be the greatest thing since the .357, and it would still take time to become a trusted caliber since the need is probably filled by some old cartridge commonly available. It would face stiff competition from the traditional cartridges.
There are rounds for everyone, from little old ladies to hardened troops. Some recoil heavily or have too much muzzle blast for some shooters. Some aren't hot enough for defense in the Rockies, some don't have the capacity for crowds in the city. Some need to be fired from large, heavy pistols not suitable for CC.
Needs are different, shooters are different and the nice selection of serviceable calibers gives us lots of choices and choosing is half the fun. Bullet placement papers over some low power deficiencies.
The little mouse guns are a lot better than no gun at all.
