THAT is exactly why I don’t fish. 🤦‍♂️😬

A friend of my dad's who was scuba certified had to dive in a lake to retrieve an outboard engine that came off the transom of a fishing boat of a 3rd friend. There were carp down there in the murky gloom that were bumping into him, he thought were submerged logs. He kept pushing them out of the way, till one of these logs wrapped its mouth around his arm and tried to EAT him!! These carp were the biggest on record, bigger than a man. (no, not making this up)

Diver dude takes his underwater lamp and shines it on this thing that's latched onto his arm, sees how HUGE this carp is, and nearly gets the bends coming up out of the water... and practically runs (not walks) on the water all the way to shore!!

Diver dude told his buddy, "forget the engine, just buy another one. I aint EVER going in that lake EVER AGAIN!!!"

My father was a rescue diver back in the day. They got called out to retrieve a body out of lake Patagonia in Arizona. When they found the body (the legs is all they saw) they tied a rope on it and started pulling it up to the surface (Using a winch on the boat mind you). They noticed that the winch was struggling a little and bumped up the power. Only to find out a huge catfish wash attached to the body. He said he never would do a rescue in that lake ever again. True story found the news article about it that my father saved when I was younger.

There is no denying that we have no idea what’s at the bottom of some these deep lakes and what we “think” are just simple waterways. I firmly believe that for the most part these are fish that are hundreds of years old.

I heard the deep sea salvage divers on my last ship (rescue salvage) say that if they could see what they were down there with, they'd probably think twice about getting back in the water.

I was in Florida fishing the inter coastal waterway on the east coast in the Stuart area. it was around the inlet, so it was fresh/salt water mix with the tides. Dad had a long dock at the house and we would wade fish first light. Water was waist deep out past 100 yards. I was out away from the dock waist deep and caught a Small snook. not legal size. Released and kept fishing .
got another bite. Fought a larger fish for awhile. Thought I had a Jack Cravale on the line. They fight and put up a fun struggle. Got the fish about 10 feet away and it broke the surface.

damn Bull Shark about 5 foot long !

Cut his ass loose quick, and waded towards shore. He followed me for a good ways in.
Caught 5 more that day from the dock.

never wade fished in the ocean or intercostal again after that

In my late teens early 20’s my cousin and I went swimming in the ocean as much as possible, our favorite spot was off the coast in Rhode Island. A beach known by locals as East Beach it was a large section of coastline but not well known to tourists. We found out about it from a couple ladies we met at a local bar one night but that’s another story. 😬🤦‍♂️
My cousin and I were both proficient swimmers so we would swim way out and body surf back in doing that for hours. On one occasion we hit the beach swam for about an hour then took break, we were out of the the water maybe a minute when we heard a horrible scream.
Thinking that someone was drowning we ran towards the noise, as we got closer someone was dragging a lady out of the water, her right leg was gone below the knee. Shark attack. I never went back in ocean past my ankles ever again.
Anywhere, Ever.
