A sling serves many purposes. It carries your rifle, maintain control of it, and keep your hands free. Some are better than others, though.

Some are definitely better than others.
BFG Vickers is better than every other sling.
Magpul makes good ones too. I run Magpuls on lighter stuff like ARs and BFGs on shotguns.
