I think the carbine got a bad reputation. GI's tended to compare it with the 30-06 Garand...of course it came up short! Every other rifle used in the war did. But compare the carbine to the 1911, well, now you are on to something. Remember, the carbine was designed to be light to carry and easy to manage for support guys. Riflemen got rifles. Radio men, artillery men, officers, cooks...they needed to be able to defend themselves but were not out front. (officers excepted) So 75-100 yard hits with the carbine were easy, not so with the 1911. I see the .30 Carbine as the first personal defense weapon for support staff. I now I have to go kick myself for selling mine 30 odd years ago...like an idiot. Because I thought it was underpowered, and in my youth I didn't understand its mission.
