I think the carbine got a bad reputation. GI's tended to compare it with the 30-06 Garand...of course it came up short! Every other rifle used in the war did. But compare the carbine to the 1911, well, now you are on to something. Remember, the carbine was designed to be light to carry and easy to manage for support guys. Riflemen got rifles. Radio men, artillery men, officers, cooks...they needed to be able to defend themselves but were not out front. (officers excepted) So 75-100 yard hits with the carbine were easy, not so with the 1911. I see the .30 Carbine as the first personal defense weapon for support staff. I now I have to go kick myself for selling mine 30 odd years ago...like an idiot. Because I thought it was underpowered, and in my youth I didn't understand its mission.

I like the .30 carbine. Nice light rifle to carry, decent accuracy and firepower. For long range the Garand everytime but for 150 and in I’ll take the carbine. They got a reputation (undeserved imho) for being underpowered, however there are a bunch of Germans, Japanese, Koreans and Vietnamese who’d disagree. Compared to the typical SMG round they stacked up well.

The carbine is my all time favorite military rifle, smokeless powder at least lol. A lot of people do not realize it's even lighter than the M4.

The only real complaint i have heard was as originally issued rhe push bolt safety could be mistaken for the magazine release. This was fixed by the new safety switch. They are easy to replace.
