The past week I took a trip to the range and shot handguns. Everything was going well until I shot my Model 60 3 inch. Suddenly, after 3 years it was shooting a foot high, what the hell. Being rather quick of thought it occurred to me my nephew had done something.

My nephew you say? Ok time out rewind about a week. OK for brevity sake we shall from here in out call him D. Ok, DA is getting his CPL and he has on order a model 60 like mine. So, he begged to borrow mine for his class. Against everything I have been taught and my instincts I finally relented after pressure from my wife. It's only a bit of target practice and 100 round class she says, let DA borrow it, she of course did not call him DA that is my loving new knickname for him.

So, I gave him the revolver to use for a week. Turns out DA ended up using a Bersa Thunder his dad left him, ok fine with me. The Model 60 was relatively clean when I got it back except powder rings on the cylinder face. So I went shooting before total cleanup.

So now we are shooting a foot high, with. So I called DA and asked wth may have occured. It seem DA was shooting low so he proceeded to file down my front sight for me. Ughhhh what could go wrong.

So, off to Magnaport I go. Of course i alternated Praying every mile they have that particular color green sight still, they told me three years ago they were going to be discontinued, and cussing my brilliant nephew out.

So I get there, and explain about my nephew DA. Turns out not only do they still have it, the owner took my 60 back there on the spot and put the new one on. Then I almost fell over when he would not take a penny for it or his time. Now that's customer service.

DA of course never borrows a gun again and was lucky as he was going to pay for it.

I of course consider myself DA for loaning it in the first place.

Wow. Glad it worked out so well for you. I can't imagine the balls of modifying a gun you borrowed from someone. I think the name DA is a bit too polite. I also think you should inform the wife that she is never again to question any of your decisions when it comes to loaning out any of your stuff. Jesus man. If that had happened to me the entire world around me would have suffered repercussions. My wife would still be hiding out somewhere.

I must admit for his sake and mine everyone was lucky I was too dumb founded to react.

I have had the experience of family wrecking my stuff. I have started telling them I want a security deposit for the value of the tool and they stopped asking.
back in my youth and wrench turning days, i never allowed anyone to borrow anything. i had a man who i never met, need to replace his fan belt, came into my shop to "borrow" some tools...

i told him to well...................words i cannot say here.

i had a trucker come in, he was on my property, needing a wrench to tighten his shock absorber......i told him the same thing....

i had a few pick up trucks in my day, always made it a point to never let anyone take one for the day...

it was a great habit for me to start way back when.........and i don't feel the least bit guilty

I let my adult stepson borrow my table saw. It came back with the blade warped and evidence of the blade contacting the fence.🤯. I was furious but he’s a good kid whom I didn’t want to alienate so I just ate it. Needless to say my wife doesn’t encourage loaning MY tools out anymore.😂

You have the patience of a Saint my man. I try to be more even handed in my old age but I would have completely lost my :poop:

Back when I was still working at my sheriffs dept, a deputy had to send his gun back for a repair, and asked if I had one he could borrow, so, being a nice guy (Yea I can be a nice guy) I lent him a Glock 19, he used it for several weeks till his pistol came back, while he didn't hurt it like your nephew did, shot the crap out of it, he didn't clean it, just kept it in his holster, no maintenance whatsoever, so, after this, I quit lending my stuff out.......

Hi @Sld1959,

That's quite the saga. It would certainly sour me on lending DA anything else. I've had a family member not return tools for weeks. They would get upset when I'd call and say I need that tool back today, right now. (A project had come up.) So I'd ask, "Why didn't you return it any of the four times you've been over since you used it?"

Anyway, I think you are within your rights to be very wary of lending anything to your nephew. Once bit, twice shy. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Back in the late 80’s my “then” wife and I had just bought our first house and my father gave me a brand new Makita circular saw for my birthday.
Back then they didn’t come in those big plastic boxes. I hadn’t even used it yet and my brother in law, wife’s sisters husband stopped by to show me his new truck and we had a beer. He saw my new saw and asked if he could borrow it. I normally didn’t lend out my tools but gave in. He took the saw and put it in the bed of the truck and off he went. My wife went to visit her sister the following weekend and when she came home she didn’t look happy, she finally told me the saw had been left in the bed of the truck and forgotten all week and it had rained all week, it was ruined.
He never even apologized or offered to buy me a new one. I had to buy a new one myself so my father wouldn’t find out. I learned quickly not to loan out anything ever again.

Wooooweeee! If that had been my gun that DA did that to people would be asking where to send flowers. Well maybe not quite but he'd never make that mistake again. I've had people say "You can't fix stupid.", and I tell them that I can but it's gonna hurt like a S.O.B.
family or not...Small claims court and Judge Judy.

where "her opinion is to only one that counts".......
