Fading Away? The .45ACP isn’t Going Away

The 45 ACP is my favorite round. It has moderate recoil and is easy to shoot with accuracy out of a full size pistol, it makes a big deep penetrating hole, and can throw a half ounce of lead. What more could you want?

I’m not a big fan of the 1911 platform although I understand the appeal, I prefer more modern designs like my Springfield XD-45 Tactical w/13 round magazine.

As a follow up to the article in part to what I missed the first time I read it is about the 1911, I never had any interest in a hammer fired handgun until talking to a great guy I used to work with. Then there was the day I held one, just holding it I fell in love with that Range Officer. Perfect balance. I bought it. 45ACP Honestly didn’t know what to expect. Wow how sweet it is. I found out quickly it’s not a belt holster carry gun, just to darn heavy but I’m looking forward to cooler weather and jackets to try out my shoulder rig. I also know it will be perfect in my leg thigh holster for backwoods trekking.

I have seen many stories about 40 S&W going away, especially since many LE agencies have switched to 9mm, but I have never heard anyone claim that 45 ACP was at risk. The 1911 alone sells enough units per year to keep the 45 relevant. The majority of gun owners I know own at least one 45, and I routinely saw them being fired at the range when ammo was available. Seeing as how .25 ACP and .32 ACP are still being produced, I find it highly unlikely that any of today's popular calibers would be in danger of disappearing anytime soon.
