I was also told by a previous instructor to keep from hugging cover, not only for slicing the pie, but also rounds impacting your cover may not penetrate all the way but shatter cover and hit you with debris from your cover

An old-school trick—mainly using unjacketed bullets—was to actually “skip” your bullet off a hard surface, like a brick wall, into your target if they were using a corner for cover.

Surprisingly effective.
