Based on the article, it looks to me like the man had his eye on the woman for a while and was planning to rape her, maybe kill her afterwards then leave her in the laundry room and walk away. Good for her 1) that she had the means to defend herself and 2) that she lived in a state where her having a firearm was legal. There are probably thousands of incidents like this where the display of a gun wards off the attacker and nothing is ever reported. Anyway, good for her!
