Formative book of my youth - Woodcraft and Camping

Sld1959

Ronin
One of the most impactful books I read as a young person was Woodcraft and Camping by George Washington Sears, aka Nessmuk.

It's an old book written in 1884, and it has been in constant print since. This book is relatively short and easy to read but I say go slow, reread passages and savor the contents.

It showed me how Woodcraft should be simple, easy, elegant. It's not about conquering the wild, it's moving slowly with it. There is information on setting up camp, canoeing, fishing hunting, and everything in between.

If you are at all interested in the outdoors, I believe it is a must read.

I was similarly impacted by "At Home In the Woods" by Bradford Angier. It wasn't a how-to book, but a biographical story of a couple who homesteaded along the Peace River in British Columbia. I always aspired to be a hermit in a log cabin in the woods. I failed.

There's also Horace Kephart.
