I stumbled upon this video today of Fred Dibnah a legendary steeplejack from Bolton England and I was blown away by the amount of hardwork this man would put into each day as a steeplejack. Fred would tap anchors into the sides of the masonry surface then tie his ladders to them and climb up hundreds of feet in the air to work without any fall protection all while carrying the weight of his massive cahoonas.

What are your thoughts on this old time profession do you think you would have ever been able to do this in any period of your life?

When I was younger and immortal? I would’ve done it without a second thought. I probably would have liked it (I I used to jump the 4’ gap from grain bin to grain bin, 30’ or so up, on our farm while growing up…would take the cap off the top of silos 50’+ without thinking about it, no fall protection at all).

Then, when walking steel as my summer job—I was 21 or so—I nearly took a 125’ fall; I swear my fingerprints were in the I-beam I grabbed on my way down.. Would’ve been game over if I hadn’t clawed my way onto the beam; took 3 guys an hour to get me off it into safe structure.

Haven’t liked heights ever since.

Yeah falling isn't fun, but is is fast!

I fell roughly 25ft onto a concrete floor when I was in my early 20's and luckily I didn't break anything. I did receive 6 stitches above my eye and a deep contusion on my whole left side. The strange part was I wasn't afraid of heights before the fall but for a few months after I was real uneasy to go on anything high.
