The Navy has a Congressionally set 31-ship big deck Amphibious warfare ship requirement, which is good because 31 are listed on active duty with the fleet.

However, the GAO did some checking as to their actual readiness and found the “go to war in 96 hours” capability to be far less.

In fact, just 15 are in what the Navy would consider to even be in “satisfactory” material condition.

  • Nine of the 10 LSDs are now classified by the Navy as in poor material condition.
  • Five of the nine remaining LHAs/LHDs are now classified as in poor material condition.
  • Two of the 12 LPDs are now classified as in poor material condition.

i would believe it
wonder how many were scheduled for yard periods. the heavy stuff gets done there and it often is longer than expected

its sort of shocking how many are really not ready to stand up and say READY

I suspect that applies to all classes across the board. Debacles like the “literal combat ships” and the stupid Zumwalts have soaked up Billions of $$$ and given us nothing in return. We had “the” most heavily armed and armored warships in the world in the modernized Iowa’s, but they were “too expensive” to operate, sow we spent enough on the three Zumwalts to have operated the Iowa’s for a couple decades and wound up with three lightly armored vessels who had Zero ammunition for their main weapons. Then we supplemented them with poorly built littoral combat ships so poorly designed they were removed from service after less than a decade. DOGE needs to Ck out the idiots responsible for these and similar boondoggles in DOD over the last couple decades.

You know, somebody had to be seriously stupid to build a weapons system and then fail to provide munitions for it.🙄. Can you imagine the army saying “well here’s our new main battle tank, but unfortunately we can’t give you any ammo for the main gun”. Can you say “worthless”. Yea, I know the reason was the $1,000,000 price PER Round, but shouldn’t Somebody have figured that out BEFORE spending the money on the ships and guns?
