Hoping to join the USAMU, Gary Anderson sent records of his scores to Col. Thomas Sharpe along with a request for assignment.
At that time, only one or two people on the USAMU team could match Anderson’s scores, casting doubt on their veracity. The USAMU Sgt. Major nearly made Anderson a typist, thinking he inflated his abilities, but Col. Sharpe gave Anderson an opportunity to prove himself.
1st Lt. Anderson shot on the USAMU International Rifle Team from January 1959 to January 1962, and spent the following summers on active duty with the USAMU as a National Guardsman. Anderson won two Olympic Gold Medals in 300m 3x40 free rifle, 47 total international medals, set 6 individual World Records, and holds Distinguished International Shooter Badge #1.
