Yesterday we had a break in the weather (no rain, some sunshine, a bit warmer), so I made a trip to the range. It has been a month since the last visit due to mostly crappy weather. Got to the range, forgetting that they had changed the gate lock combination (and I had not rec'd an email), so I called the office (a different location) and was readily provided the new combo. Had the entire place to myself as is fairly common during the work week.
Parked my truck and went and scanned the range. Saw some target stands that had only one complete vertical 2"x2" upright remaining to staple cardboard and a target to. The other uprights had been literally shot in two, and were laying on the ground. Took a gander out to the 100 yd line and saw what looked to be two complete 2"x2"s !
Walked the 100yds to retrieve it, along with the angle-iron base attached. The wooden uprights looked to have been pounded-in, and I was unable to pull them free to use a metal stand already at the 50 yd line. Toted that sucker to the 50yd line, then walked to the shooting line to retrieve my staple gun, a paper target w/stick-on target already applied, and a piece of cardboard. Walked back to the 50yd line and attached the cardboard and almost got the paper target stapled-on......until I ran out of staples. Walked back up and put more staples in the stapler, then went back down and finished attaching the target.
After all of that I sat down and had a bottle of water and a snack. Okay, ready to start so got the Edge out, ammo, and a mag, and loaded it. Eyepro and earpro on, get the rifle situated on my range bag for support, look through the flip-up sights and........one side of the cardboard comes loose and sways in the steady breeze. Unloaded the rifle, removed the mag, safed it, then went and re-stapled the cardboard.
At this point I'm wondering if I should just pack it in and head home. I let that thought quickly pass and got everything ready to shoot again. I take 5 shots, take a check with my binocs, and don't see any holes in the paper. One of those WTF moments. Then I notice the rear sight, and the peep hole is rotated fwd a bit.
Figured that happened when I laid the rifle on the bag when I went down to re-staple the cardboard. Corrected that, ran 40 rounds through the Edge, then switched to the pistols XD Mod2 9, and XDS9, having moved the target stand closer, and shooting at 10 yds. Finished-up, packed my gear, and headed home. I told "Murphy" to walk. He wasn't allowed in the truck.
