Governor/Judge Defense Loads

I'm looking for suggestions from Governor and Judge owners about what loads may be the best for home self-defense use. What do use for .410 shotgun shells, .45 Colt, and in the case of the Governor, .45ACP defense loads? I need to mention that my Governor is not my EDC. The only time I carry my Governor is when I'm working on my property (mowing lawn, weed eating, cutting down trees/brush, etc.). I sometimes have rattlesnake issues. Some of you will have issues about what I say and do about the rattlesnakes. I kill them, plain and simple. I don't do capture and relocation BS. My dogs have been struck in the past, and my neighbors have small children that are always playing outside in their yards (we live in the country, not a city or town). I load up with .410 small game loads for the snakes. When I'm not doing yard work, my Governor becomes one of my secondary home defense guns, hidden away, but readily available. What loads would you recommend as a home defense load for the interior of a house? As in what for .410, what for .45 Long Colt, and what for .45 ACP. Thanks for any thoughts.

Actually, .410 uses 000B—“triple-aught” buckshot.

I use Federal “Handgun” 000B in my Governor; it has Flite-Control wads, and it cuts down on the annulus effect (ie,”donut pattern”) from the rifled barrel. Also, the pellets are plated and hardened, which gives better penetration.

At 20 feet, they give about a 3” pattern.

The Remington 2.5” 000B also gave good results for me. Its softer lead, so penetration may suffer.

I was not impressed with the Hornady 115gr slug + 3x00B pellet load. Not consistent at all.

That's the kind of info I'm looking for. Any thoughts about .45 Long Colt or .45 ACP defensive ammo that would work well in a Governor? Or should I just stick to 000B?

What *realistic* range/purpose are you thinking of using it for?

Mine is pretty much purpose-driven as backup in-house defense, and as anti-carjacking when I rarely have to go to urban areas…so my range is pretty much extremely short. I keep it loaded with the 000B, haven’t tried .45C or ACP in it.

I haven’t tried the buck loads at longer ranges, but I’m thinking 50 feet would be pushing it…maybe 2 pellets out of 4 would be on target, and you gotta remember you’re responsible for any misses…

I think the longest distant shot in my house would be 30 feet. Most distances would be from nothing to 20 plus feet.

There's a blue dot load for 00B too. Also Gun Gully makes them specifically for the Judge.

I know little about .410. I just got one not long ago. Went through a box of #6. Nice load. I might consider a #4 or a #1 load too.
Federal makes a nice 9-pellet #4B load, but it’s hard to find.

Out of a 18” barrel, I think it would work; I think it would lack penetration out of the 3” or so Governor/Judge barrel.
