Grip Safety

I have (4) Service XDs and decided to magnetically mount a pistol directly under my bathroom sink (enclosed vanity). After approx. 4 months, I have found a slight rust on all the metal guts contained inside the polymer lower (nothing on the barrel, recoil spring or slide).

My grip safety is not "springing back out" of the polymer frame! Over approx. 7 days (3 application sessions), I've had no sucess in getting the grip safety to "spring back out"! With a jeweler's screwdriver, I've pried the safety out, sprayed pressurized carbon cleaner and then poured Clenzoil inside the frame/safety to "soak" for 24-48 hours.

I see a very small pin holding the pivoting grip safety in the frame... Should I dare punch the mini-pin out and try to fix this myself, take the pistol to an approved S.A. gunsmith or send to SA? I'd rather take a beating than ship a gun!

Get a hold of XDman here on the forum, he can help you

If you live in a humid environment, don't store your firearms in an even more humid place in the house.
Unless properly protected....

The Springer Precision Youtube Channel has a bunch of really good videos that involve various aspects of detail stripping and reassembly of the XDm/XD platform -

Specifically of-interest to you should be:

^ but their frame disassembly/reassembly videos will likely also of be of-interest to you.

In terms of the rust.....

Over the years, I've actually never had any issues with rust - or even just surface oxidation - of the internals of my XDms (either factory or aftermarket components). I'm actually surprised that the other areas of your pistol remained rust-free. but that the internal small components accumulated rust. I'm wondering if perhaps swings in temperature from the sink bowl - or perhaps steam from the shower/bath - may have accumulated in the internals? My continued guess is that while the barrel, slide, and recoil-spring assembly was protected from the moisture via some kind of lube or protectant...somethig that served as sufficient barrier.

Out of curiosity. what kind of lube or protectant did you use on the parts that did not show rusting? And would my assumption that the rusty internals were not treated with this/these same substances be correct?

If so, in your shoes, I'd be willing to experiment by treating the internals (after they've been rendered clean and rust-free), and see if they hold rust-free over time.

My home is not particularly humid, but my late-oughts manufacture Remington 870 will surface-rust if you just look at it crosseyed. I've had excellent luck with Bull Frog's "Rust Hunter" gun-wipes (https://www.bull-frog.com/products/). Chad Albrecht of SOTAR recommends Birchwood Casey's "Barricade" rust preventative, which is plastics-safe.

Alternatively, as @Talyn recommended, a sealing barrier should take care of things in a definitive manner (provided that the components are now free of rust and are dry/protected (possibly with desiccant added) when you insert the gun inside. If a bag is used, be sure to account for either your wet/soapy hands and/or surface condensation in your weapon-access plans.

So, officially in the XD armorers course they tell you that if you have an issue with the Grip safety that should be a Teir 2 tech support thing that the mothership should handle. Basically the grip safety, pin and Spring can be difficult to disassemble and reassemble with out bending and or breaking the safety spring.

But if you go to the big guys like, myself (notice I included myself), Powder River, Springer Precision and others we have ways of doing it with jigs and special tools that we all made that can disassembl/reassemble lickity Split.

If it was rust, could be as simple as rust on the side of the safety thats rubbing on the frame. Blasting it and recoating it can fix it.

^ FWIW, on the record, I would recommend @xdman 's gunsmithing services wholeheartedly, without any reservation or hesitation as based on my past experiences with his sight installations. (y)

Nothing wrong with a bathroom gun. In fact it makes more sense than a kitchen gun. If you’re in the kitchen when the SHTF you can probably get to your dining room gun, but if you’re on the crapper, what then?

Just for the record, I’m not saying I don’t also have a kitchen gun.
Except the bathroom I have a gun within easy reach wherever I am, now I don’t “keep” a gun everywhere but will move my (apartment) gun to the area I’m in.
When in the bathroom I have a gun in bedroom on the dresser within easy reach.
I mentioned the the bedroom and dresser to eliminate what I’m sure I’d never hear the end of the
“within easy reach” part. 🤦‍♂️😁😂😂😂
