Probably depends on how close they get. Good question, but I have faith in the POTUS not to bow down like his predecessor did.

During '73, while deployed to the Mediterranean on a Fleet Oiler, the Soviet navy ships would run between us and another ship while we had the rigs across pumping fuel to them, and we would have to do emergency break aways, resulting in the other ship releasing the rig. Happened multiple times. Or, the Soviets would purposely cut across our bow (day & night) dangerously close.

So you don’t see a difference in probable consequences between those 2 scenarios? Do you suppose we should continue to allow Iran to hassle US ships? And do you think in a million years Russia would be stupid enough to antagonize US warships?

When they have nothing to lose it could get bad!
 
They buzz our ships and harass our military. Its overt retaliation for the clandestine ops we run over and in their airspace with stealth. For every pass over our navy or cut across the bow, its because they knew we were over their country and they couldnt do a damn thing about it as we waved and said F U !!!
U2 and gary powers was a fluke.
 
It's about time. Do we want another USS Cole? That is what we are going allow them to do. If we put a few of there "attack boats" on the bottom of the ocean, maybe they will figure out it's best not to go out looking for trouble, because they might find it.
