Gun Dealer License Scrutiny Abounds

While there’s a lot of hate and concern and some will get butt hurt the numbers are low compared to how many dealers. Even with half the FFLs than when Ed Brown did his article in the 1990’s (there were 300,000 plus FFL holders then)

Today there are around half that maybe 170,000 FFLs now (as in Browns article there are like 17,000 McDonalds and you can’t go a mile in a city without hitting one). so 160 some FFL revocations is not out of norm and with 160,000 to 170,000 FFLs that number of revolutions is well below a lot of other industries.

Working in the firearms industry and actually interacting with ATF this is what we have seen in our area.

Most licenses that get hit violate one of the 6 main instant revocation rules. Like selling to prohibited persons, no background checks, out of state handguns or restricted states, not inventory or having a bound book for incoming firearms/have to account for what is or isn’t sold and what you have/had, not providing a NICS trace or like a recent one a large tax investigation.

Believe it or not there has been LEOs have an FFL revoked for not running backgrounds in co workers because “they were an LEO and I shouldn’t have to) all kinds of stuff even an elementary dealer should know better.

A lot of folks get into doing a gun shop and have no clue on what they are doing or how it’s regulated let alone the repercussions if they don’t follow the rules and then get into hot water.

Your analogy with McDonalds is ridiculous since there are zero McDonalds operated out of someone's basement. What percentage of FFL holders are actually gunstock finishers or smiths or people in related fields who do no advertising and that almost no one has ever heard of ?

Clearly 160 FFL revocations is beyond the norm. You can make up your own opinion, but you can't make up the numbers. In fact it's about twice as many as the norm. And you seem to want to not believe your president when he flat said he was going to do it. :rolleyes:

Not defending anything from Biden it’s a simple numbers 160 out of 170,000 is a lower amount than almost any other industry that have 170,000 licenses holders that are inspected. Some folks (usually YouTube gun channels and their likes and subscribers) want to immediately run panic.

Perhaps Ed Brown can do another article where he said the same thing in the 1990’s after the not so gun friendly Clinton admin. Deja vue
 
My thinking is, (as someone who admittedly is not intimately familiar with laws governing the legal exchange of firearms) that if government creates a thick enough stack of regulations, it would border on the impossible for a “mom and pop” FFL to not violate some obscure “letter of the law.” Basically, a regulator could find something to violate an FFL even though the dealer has good intent.

Definitely. Hence the Biden administration's directive to Mettlebach ( AFT director) to implement a "No tolerance" policy towards FFL holders. Simple clerical error? Too bad, no license for you. And this is a provable fact. So trying to whitewash it as SOP is either ignorant or complicit.

As @Bassbob mentioned, it seems a no-tolerance "rule change" at the ATF has mandated the revocation of FFLs in unprecedented numbers. Over minor clerical errors people are losing their livelihood and gun sales are being restricted. Instead of working with the LGS, the ATF now simply says, "No soup for you!"

well around here we have 4 actual store front stores. this is within 22 miles of my house
and ONE in a garage of a house..i think the garage house is questionable, but they have a ffl and sell a few firearms, but mostly ammo...some of it reloads.??/ as far as inventory..he has mostly older used ones

the other four have real inventory and can order new stuff if you choose
5 years ago we had 2
also one of the 4 in store is a guy that overhauls and rebuilds older firearms as well as new stuff
he does really good work

That's really good to hear. It seems folks in your neck of the woods are doing it right, despite the fact that the government is making it less convenient. That's what it takes. Somebody just has to do it, and do it right.

Hey, why don't we all apply for our FFL? It can't be all that hard for reasonably edumacated people.

Well, back in the day it was about $30 for the license. After Bill Clinton it went up considerably.
