Guns and Travel: Can I Take My Gun on a Road Trip?

On another note, my brother in-law thinks just because his state has permit-less carry, that he can go out of state and still carry without a CCW, he is wrong, you still have to have a CCW to carry out of your state, he is exceptionally hard headed......:)
My state has constitutional carry. I still got my carry permit renewed partially for the above reason and partly because when you purchase a firearm here, the carry permit serves as the background check. Makes the whole process go MUCH easier.

He’s not wrong. Almost every state that has permitless carry allows non residents to carry. I don’t have a CCW and I went from St. Louis to Henry’s Fork Idaho armed and broke no laws.

In Ohio you still need a permit to carry out of state, only other state that’s near Ohio is WV, maybe there you can cause they have permit-less, but all the others around us, need a permit

I took a multi-state CC class a few years ago. In that class, we were warned that MOST states that allow CC and observe "reciprocity" still required me to apply for, pay for, and wait for each state's individual CC permit. Constitutional carry was not a common thing at the time. I know for a fact that MN recognizes my permit and course completion, but I still need to report to a sheriff's office (in MN) to get finger-printed and pay the MN CC permit for my multi-state WI permit to allow me to carry in MN. We discussed this same requirement for GA, FL and several other states (at that time).

I also know that IL does not reciprocate with ANY state except HI, which rarely issues CC permits (go figure).

I was very disillusioned by the multi-state permit after taking the class.

Just be careful that you know what are about to do, before you do it. Maybe things have changed in the last 3-4 years...

Huh? Ohio has permitless carry, W. Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky have permitless carry. Ohio is literally surrounded by permitless carry states and is itself a permitless carry state. And you don't need to have a permit or be a resident to carry in any of those states.

If my gun isn't welcome there, I have no desire to go there. 🤬

Tennessee went to permitless carry not long ago. However, living in the SW corner of the state, its not uncommon for me to jump across the line into Mississippi or Arkansas from time to time. Both of which recognize Tennessee's Handgun permit. Therefore I do keep my old Handgun Permit up to date. ;)

Arkansas and Mississippi are both permitless carry states GF.

Based on my last 2 posts in this thread I feel the need to clarify something. I understand that for whatever reason some of you guys would rather or have reason to want to continue paying your state government in exchange for permission to conceal a handgun. I am not trying to talk anyone out of anything. However, the reasons stated for retaining a CCW permit in the 2 posts I am referring to are unnecessary. There has been links posted in this thread which detail the gun laws in all 50 states. It might be a good reminder for those of you who keep a CCW permit to check these links out occasionally.
